Three more principles are the unfinished, the temporary, and the imperfect. They were originally considered as inferior, as errors, or as unintended results. But they have become autonomous elements of work, e.g. in sculpture, the unfinished is called the “non finito“.
Today temporary solutions are always a source of inspiration. See in the slideshow some examples of the almost finished Rolex Learning Center (EPFL Lausanne).
And the imperfect is one of several aesthetic and philosophical principles of wabi sabi in Japan.
Of course, the three principles are closely related to the idea of beauty and the well executed. And this leads to a forth principle: the ugly and badly made. Bad painting of the early 1970s is one of several art movements that used that principle.
Here are the four active principles:
- Build temporary solutions as “definitive”
- Design the unfinished as finished or make the finished as if it was unfinished
- Make it imperfect or irregular or keep it raw (cf. the aesthetic principles of wabi sabi in Japan)
- Execute badly your work on purpose
